Meet Kyle

Kyle Christensen is a proven leader with a deep commitment to serving his community. As the former Mayor of Sumas (2017–2021), Kyle gained firsthand experience navigating complex challenges, including community development and disaster response. His dedication to public service extends beyond his time in office, as he has also served as Treasurer for the Tillamook and Umatilla Tribal Volunteer Firefighter Associations. With over 25 years of experience as a volunteer firefighter across three departments, Kyle has consistently prioritized the safety and well-being of his neighbors.

Professional Experience

Professionally, Kyle brings a wealth of expertise to the table. Currently serving as the Director of the Whatcom Long Term Recovery Group, after having the role of the Flood Recovery Manager for Whatcom County. His diverse career includes six years as a Umatilla County Sheriff’s Deputy, ownership of multiple businesses—including Christensen Home Services and a Sears Dealer Store in Pendleton, Oregon—and ongoing work as a real estate agent with Home Smart One Realty. This broad experience equips Kyle with the practical skills needed to address economic, housing, and safety issues effectively.

Community Service

Kyle’s dedication to his community is evident through his active involvement in various organizations and initiatives. He has volunteered for countless cleanup days, coached youth sports, and serves as an Elder at his local church. In addition, he has been a member of the Whatcom County Housing Advisory Committee, the Flood Control District Advisory Committee, and the Small Cities Partnership. His collaborative approach has earned him respect among regional leaders, while his hands-on service reflects his commitment to creating a stronger, healthier community.

As a passionate learner, Kyle has pursued leadership training through the Association of Washington Cities and has completed certifications in business management, budget development, and emergency response. His well-rounded background and passion for building consensus make him uniquely qualified to represent Whatcom County. Kyle believes in leaving a legacy of opportunity and resilience for future generations. He is ready to continue working tirelessly to ensure that the people and businesses of Whatcom County thrive.

Kyle has a supportive family. He has been married to his wife Kathy for 22 years. Also has 3 children Elsie 19, Olivia 17, and Josiah 15. His family enjoys music and theatre and spending time together doing outdoor activities.
